Max Häggblom, a native of Finland, has been a member of the GVO since moving to New York
in 1988. In addition to playing in the violin section, he is currently serving on the Board of
Directors as Treasurer. Max is Professor of Microbiology at Rutgers University. His research is
in applied and environmental microbiology, with a focus on how bacteria degrade toxic environmental
pollutants and how microbes can be used for cleanup of contaminated environments (the New York
