Classical Music 101
This year's program is packed with hits that are sure to thrill everyone from classical music
newbies to seasoned concert-goers.  If this is your maiden voyage to a concert hall, here are
some things to know:

1) Some concert halls have dress codes.  Ours doesn't.  We like you just the way you are.

2) Our music director and guest soloists are world-class musicians, well-established and
recognized throughout the classical music industry.  Not something you see very often with
community orchestras but lucky for you, we are bringing them to your very own backyard.

3) You probably already know some of the pieces on the concert programs.  Now you're
thinking, "But I don't listen to classical music!"  Guess again.  Everyone knows
some classical
music.  There's Walt Disney's Fantasia which is set completely to a classical score including
Bach's Toccata and Fugue and Beethoven's
"Pastoral" Symphony.  Then there were The
Smurfs -- there you have Schubert's
"Unfinished" Symphony (main song for scurrying little
Smurfs) and Liszt's Piano Concerto #1 (Gargamel's theme song).  And finally, when we hear
Aaron Coplan's "Rodeo" we will always think to ourselves, "Beef - it's what's for dinner".

These are just a few tidbits from our beloved world of classical music.  Keep reading for more
about our upcoming programs.
Concert #1: Gerswhin, Ravel, Rimsky-Korsakov

George Gershwin wrote his Cuban Overture after a vacation to
Cuba.  Latin American percussion instruments - bongo, claves,
gourd, and maracas - are front and center to the music with colorful
Carribean themes.  Click on the Amazon link to hear clips of the
music or to buy a recording.  We recommend the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra with conductor James Levine.
